Investigating Claims at the Brooklyn Detention Complex

The Brooklyn Detention Complex is a borough-based jail in Kings County, Brooklyn, operated by the New York City Department of Correction. People held there are in the custody and under the control of correction officers, medical staff, and other employees.

In January 2026 the New York City Council enacted Intro 1297-A as Law 2026/050, which took effect on January 29, 2026 and reopened an 18-month lookback window under the Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law. The law allows survivors to bring civil claims against the institutions connected to gender-motivated abuse, alongside the individuals responsible; whether any given claim succeeds is decided in court. 12

We are actively investigating possible claims involving the Brooklyn Detention Complex. We do not assert a documented pattern of abuse at this facility, and the GMVA pathway here is described in general terms. If you experienced sexual abuse while in custody there, a confidential review is the way to learn how the GMVA may apply to your own circumstances. These would be allegations that have not been proven in court.

If you were sexually abused while in custody at the Brooklyn Detention Complex, you can speak with us confidentially. A free review will tell you honestly whether you may have a claim and how the filing window applies to you.
